Sore Shoulder?

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Within my sport therapy clinics I have noticed a rise in shoulder problems. Mostly from the rotator cuff muscles. Unfortunately any injury to the rotator cuff is sore with no power in the arm muscles. It debilitates movement that impacts on work and home life. If not treated it also causes further complications due to an imbalance of stress within the joints causing muscle spasms or referred pain - Not good :(

People over 40 years old have the highest risk of suffering an injury or tear. It is a fact that we are living longer. Therefore it is imperative we keep our bodies functional. (Visit my Sport Therapy website)

Injuries and pain of any kind should not be left. There are many therapists you can attend to solve aches and pains. Obviously I recommend Sport Therapy or Sport Massage as that is my field of training, but I've listed below therapists. (These are quicker to get appointments than a doctor, a good therapist always assesses and will refer you to a physiotherapist, doctor, hospital etc if an injury is severe or out of their scope of practice).

  • Acupuncture

  • Aromatherapy

  • Chiropractic Treatment

  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

  • Homeopathy

  • Kinesiology

  • Massage Therapy

  • Osteopathy

  • Physiotherapy

  • Pilates

  • Reflexology

  • Reiki

  • Sports Therapy

  • Yoga Therapy

Dealing with shoulder pain...

Injuries of the rotator cuff include falling and catching yourself incorrectly or repetitive stress, such as throwing a ball over and over. Degeneration is often a contributing factor and includes pain when resting on the shoulder or when the arm is lifted or lowered. A client might also have weakness or hear a cracking noise when the arm is moved. When the cuff is already wearing away after decades of use, it is much easier for a tear to take place. The majority of rotator cuff tears occur due to a combination of degeneration and repetitive motion.

Muscles involved when treating a shoulder injury

When I am working to rehabilitate the shoulder function, some muscles I manipulate are: Supraspinatus, Subscapularis, Infraspinatus, Teres Major & Minor. Major & Minor Rhomboids, Pectorals Major & Minor, Deltoid, Triceps & Biceps. (Hope my sport clients and anatomy students are reading this... Questions will be asked... lol).

For maximum prevention of further injury you need to ensure the muscles within the back, neck, chest are balanced so the stress is equalised on the joints.

What happens if it's a serious injury?

A rotator cuff tear will be referred and dealt with by a doctor or physiotherapist, usually with an MRI and/or ultrasound, rather than an X-ray. This is because X-rays do not show soft tissue, which is where the affected area will be visible.

My duty as a sport therapist is to rebalance and correct posture to reduce pain. I work to prevent injury, condition muscles to their maximum form, correct posture and rehabilitate the function of muscles and ROM within a joints. All therapist have their own specialist skills and experience so please discuss and check them out before attending - Going on recommendations is the best method in my view.
